Why do I need a marine survey before buying or insuring a boat?
A survey offers independent, professional assurance about the vessel’s condition and value. For buyers, it helps identify defects or risks before purchase. For owners and insurers, it confirms the vessel is safe, seaworthy, and compliant with industry standards, reducing financial and safety risks.
How long does a survey take, and how soon will I receive the report?
It largely depends on the vessel’s size and complexity. While for a smaller, under 24 meter yacht usually takes a full day, surveying a larger vessel may take a couple of days. The written report is delivered within 48 hours after completion of the survey, providing a detailed record of condition, findings and recommendations.
Can I attend the survey, and will you explain your findings on site?
Yes, clients are welcome to attend. While the formal report is the official record, we encourage you to join at the end of the inspection for a verbal walk-through of key findings. This gives you a chance to ask questions in real time.
Do you need the boat to be hauled out of the water for the survey?
Yes, for a complete assessment, the vessel should be hauled out to inspect the hull, running gear, and underwater fittings. Some surveys (like insurance renewals) may be carried out afloat if specifically agreed, but a full pre-purchase survey always includes an out-of-water inspection.
How much does a marine survey cost?
The cost of a survey depends on the type of survey, the vessel’s size, construction, and complexity, as well as the location and whether a sea trial or haul-out is required. For vessels under 24 meters, prices typically start at around €30 per foot. For vessels over 24 meters, fees are quoted individually based on size and complexity. We always provide clear, upfront quotations tailored to your vessel and needs. While the survey is a small investment compared to the value of the boat, it can save you significant costs by identifying issues early.
